Palo Santo — meaning "Holy Wood" — has been treasured for generations as a sacred wood for cleansing, purification and spiritual ritual.
Native to the dry tropical forests of Central and South America, particularly associated with Peru and Ecuador, Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens) belongs to the same botanical family as frankincense and myrrh — two of the most revered aromatic resins in human history.
The Scent and the Smoke
When gently burned, the wood releases its distinctive warm, woody, slightly citrus-like aroma. In traditional spiritual practice, the smoke is used to clear heavy or stagnant energy from a person, room or object — helping to create a space that feels lighter, calmer and more peaceful.
Its ritual use for cleansing has deep roots in South American traditions, where it has been carried through generations not as a trend, but as a living practice passed from one person to the next.
More Than a Beautiful Fragrance
For many people, Palo Santo is more than simply a beautiful scent. It marks a moment to stop, reset and set an intention.
It may be used before meditation, prayer, healing work or simply when the atmosphere of a space feels heavy and you want to begin again with a clearer energy. There is something in the act of lighting it — the small ritual of it, the pause it creates — that invites you to arrive somewhere on purpose rather than simply drifting through your day.
Why is Palo Santo Considered So Powerful?
Its power lies in the meaning and intention that have surrounded it for generations.
The ritual of lighting the wood, allowing the fragrant smoke to move through your space and consciously releasing what you no longer wish to carry can become a deeply grounding spiritual practice. It is not the wood itself that does the work — it is what you bring to the moment of lighting it.
"Cleansing is not about removing something bad. It is about creating space for something better."
Use it to cleanse your space, your energy, crystals or spiritual items, or before setting an intention. Open a window if you wish, allowing the old, stagnant energy to leave as you welcome in a lighter, more peaceful atmosphere.
How to Use It
There is no single correct way, but here is a simple approach:
- Hold the Palo Santo stick at one end and light the tip with a candle flame or match.
- Allow it to catch for around thirty seconds, then gently blow out the flame so the wood smoulders and releases its smoke.
- Move slowly through your space, allowing the smoke to drift into corners, doorways and areas that feel heavy or stagnant.
- Set your intention as you go — what are you releasing? What are you welcoming in?
- Rest the stick in a fireproof dish when you are done. It will extinguish naturally.
Cleanse. Release. Reset. Set your intention.
